Murray Gell-Mann. Portrait of the US physicist Murray Gell-Mann (born 1929). In 1953,Gell-Mann introduced a new quantum property, strangeness,to explain the strong nuclear force that holds atomic nuclei together. His later classification system for subatomic particles successfully predicted the existence of a new particle, the omega-minus. With Zweig,in 1964,he postulated quarks as being the fundamental constituents of particles such as protons and neutrons. Gell-Mann won the 1969 Nobel Prize for Physics. Photographed in 1956. ***** NO ADVERTISING USAGE IN CONSUMER OR TRADE MAGAZINES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL ***** | |
