Professors Stanley Pons (left,b.1943) and Martin Fleischmann (b.1927),the co-discoverers of 'cold fusion'. Announced in 1989,cold fusion caused a storm in the science world. The process involves the electrolysis of heavy (deuterated) water in a cell with a platinum anode and palladium cathode. The deuterium ions are driven into the lattice of the palladium, allegedly causing nuclear fusion and the release of considerable energy. Photographed at IMRA (Minoru Institute of Advanced Research) in southern France in 1993,where Fleischmann and Pons now claim 100 times more energy release than in their 1989 work | |
