MODEL RELEASED. Counting allergic cells. Doctor Stephen Durham sits at a microscope while counting cells in nasal tissue. A tissue sample from a patient suffering allergic rhinitis (hay fever) was taken by nasal biopsy. The outline of nasal mucosa tissue is seen superimposed. Crosses in the tissue depict the number of inflamed cells seen. This cell count is compared with previous biopsy samples of the patient to establish whether fewer cells are inflamed. In this way,the effectiveness of hay fever treatments like topical nasal sprays are tested. Hay fever is an allergy in which cells react to substances like pollen.
