Lebanese oil spill,August 2006. Satellite image of the oil spill (dark swirls in the water) off the coast of Lebanon. The Lebanese capital Beirut occupies the triangular peninsula at centre. The spill is emanating from the Jiyyeh (or Jiyeh) Power Station, which lies 30 kilometres south of Beirut. The fuel oil storage tanks there were bombed by the Israeli Air Force between 13th and 15th July 2006,during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The ongoing conflict prevented clean-up efforts, allowing the spill to grow to cover over 150 kilometres. It is thought that over 15,000 tonnes of oil poured into the Mediterranean Sea.
