Red slate. Slate is a metamorphic rock produced by the action of heat and pressure on existing rock (usually shale or clay) from an intruding mass of magma (molten rock) or hot igneous rocks (solidified magma). Slate forms in well-defined layers along which it is easily cleaved. It is often used as a roofing material. Photographed in Ardennes in eastern Belgium | |
