False-colour infrared image of the area around Mount Etna,Sicily, made by an aircraft-mounted Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS). The summit craters of the volcano are seen just below and to the right of centre. The various colours represent the thermal emissivity of the surface materials. The light blue areas show volcanic ash,the bright orange areas are recent lava flows. Older lava flows are seen as violet and pink. The yellow and green areas are regions of increasing vegetation. This image was made from an aircraft flying 4,270 metres above the summit, and at a surface resolution of 10 metres per pixel | |
