Nephron structure. Artwork showing the structure of a nephron, the functional filtering unit of a kidney. The function of the kidney is to filter waste products such as urea from the blood. The filtration occurs in the renal corpuscle where a glomerulus is encased in a Bowman's capsule. Waste products drain through the proximal convoluted tubule, the loop of Henle (where water is reabsorbed),and the distal convoluted tubule, into a collection duct. Each human kidney contains around one million nephrons | |
