Jules Dumont D'Urville (1790-1842). 1869 illustration of the French Antarctic explorer and naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville. In 1820,during an expedition to Greece,D'Urville recognised the recently-discovered Venus de Milo as an ancient statue and secured its purchase for France. In 1826 he began an expedition to find the missing explorer La Perouse during which he surveyed many Pacific islands. During 1837-40 he sailed to Antarctica and discovered the Adelie coast (named after his wife) and Joinville Island. His observations helped to prove that Antarctica was a large continent. D'Urville was killed with his wife and son in a train accident in France | |
