Apple stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through the stem of a young apple (Malus domestica) tree plant. The centre of the stem, the pith,is at bottom. Surrounding it is a ring of vascular bundles. Each ring contains phloem (green and red) and xylem cells (spaces in orange tissue),which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Outside of this are bundles of thick-walled sclerenchyma cells (yellow) that provide structural support. Over-laying the stem's epidermis (green) is the cuticle (orange).
