Wolf-Rayet bubble. Composite optical and X-ray image of the bubble S308 (60 lights years across) caused by the powerful stellar wind around the Wolf-Rayet star HD 50896. This star is 5000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Canis Major. The XMM-Newton EPIC (European Photon Imaging Camera) X-ray data (blue) was combined with optical data from CTIO (Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory). These were H-alpha (red) and [O III] (green). The stellar wind (blue) is seen in X-ray,while the nebular material is seen in H-alpha (red). The shock propagating outwards into the circumstellar medium is seen in [O III] light (green) | |
