Ronald Ross (1857-1932),British physician,as a colonel in the British Army in 1916. Ross was born in India,where he returned after studying medicine in London. From 1890 he worked on malaria. By 1900 he and others (including Giovanni Battista Grassi) had shown that malaria is passed by mosquito bites. For this discovery,Ross was awarded the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Ross also had interests in poetry,fiction and mathematics. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1901),he was made Companion (1902) and Knight Commander (1911) of the Order of the Bath. His 19-year-old son Ronald was killed in action in August 1914 | |
