Anaesthetic inhaler,1903. This is a Vernon Harcourt chloroform inhaler. A. G. Vernon Harcourt (1834-1919) was an English chemist and a member of the Chloroform Committee of the Royal College of Surgeons. Chloroform was less explosive and more effective than ether as an anaesthetic, but it caused more fatalities from overdosing. Harcourt introduced this inhaler in 1899. The valves allowed delicate control over the amount of chloroform delivered. The device was also portable, which was essential as doctors travelled to their patients | |
