Insect pheromone trap on a fruit tree. The trap releases chemicals similar to the pheromones used by insects to attract a mate. When the insects land on the trap they become stuck to its sticky surface. Traps such as this are used to collect insects and to control agricultural pests. The traps act as early warning systems, allowing the detection of adult insect emergence and the monitoring of pest populations. This enables insecticide to be sprayed only when and where it is needed. Photographed in an orchard in France | |
