Heart contraction cycle. Artwork of the pumping mechanism of the human heart. At left,the heart is in a relaxed state,called diastole. The atria (top chambers) and ventricles (bottom chambers) are filling with blood from the superior and inferior vena cava (left,origin of blue arrows) as well as the pulmonary vein (origin of red arrow). The middle image shows the heart at the beginning of systole,or the pumping stage. The atria contract,forcing blood into the ventricles through the bicuspid and tricuspid (atrioventricular) one-way valves. At right,the heart is at the end of systole. The ventricles are forcefully contracting,pushing blood into the aorta and pulmonary artery through the aortic and pulmonary one-way valves
