Orbit of near-Earth asteroid Apophis, showing its position (red line) as it passed near the Earth on 14 December 2004. The orbits of Earth,Venus and Mercury around the Sun are at left. A close-up of Earth is at right. Apophis,or MN4,orbits the Sun every 323.5 days. Initial calculations showed that there was a chance it would strike Earth on 13 April 2029. Subsequent studies have shown that it will miss the Earth by around 36,000 kilometres. As shown at right, this approach may deflect it enough for it to collide with Earth on its 2036 approach. Apophis is 320 metres wide, large enough to devastate a wide area but too small to cause mass extinctions | |
