View from above the tree line at Mt Stirling,Victoria Australia. In the foreground an alpine meadow gives way at about 1400m to the tree cover below. In the middle ground are the remains of many snow gum trees ( Eucalyptus pauciflora ) that were destroyed in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009,four years before this picture was taken. Bushfires burn at their hottest at higher altitudes, causing widespread destruction of tree species, which then regenerate either from underground lignotubers (swollen stems ) or by seed. The green herbal vegetation visible consists of grasses and Hovea spp. (bottom right ) | |
