Electronic compound-eye with bumblebee, conceptual image. Close up view of an array of 180 miniature lenses on the surface of a curved polymer base. A bumblebee stands on top of the lens. Each microlens is connected to a silicon photodetector. The entire unit measures one centimetre in diameter and is designed to mimic the structure of an insect's compound eye. It is capable of taking low resolution digital images. Wide-angle compound-lens cameras could in future be used on surveillance equipment, unmanned flying vehicles and medical endoscopes.
