English army at Brest in 1386. 15th-century artwork of an English army fighting French forces at Brest in Brittanny. This was part of a campaign led by John of Gaunt,1st Duke of Lancaster,a leading English noble and uncle to the young King Richard II. He sailed from England for Castile (Spain) in July 1386 with a large Anglo-Portuguese fleet (ships at upper left) and an army of thousands. During the journey,he aided Brest in the independent Duchy of Brittany,driving off the besieging French forces.
