Locust pest control. 19th-century artwork showing Arab farmers digging a pit in which to bury locusts caught in a net (white). These are part of a series of large locust swarms that affected Algeria and many parts of North Africa in 1889. This led to deaths from famines resulting from the destruction of crops, and from cholera and other water-borne diseases caused by rotting locust bodies contaminating the water supplies. Swarms can contain tens of millions of locusts. This artwork, based on a photograph,is from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree' | |
