Parkinson's disease research. Fluorescent deconvolution micrograph of a cultured astrocyte used in research into Parkinson's disease. The cell nucleus is blue and collagen connective tissue is green. The protein alpha-synuclein is red. It is thought that it is the accumulation of this protein that causes the progressive degeneration of the neurons that leads to the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. These symptoms include tremor, muscular rigidity, poor balance and depression. Astrocytes are a type of glial cell. They provide structural support and protection for neurons (nerves cells) and also supply them with nutrients and oxygen. Magnification: x600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
