White Star offices after Titanic sinking. RMS Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. Some 710 people were rescued by RMS Carpathia and taken to New York, arriving on the evening of 18 April. News of the sinking had been transmitted by wireless. However,it had not been possible to send full lists of who had been rescued, and large crowds waited for news at White Star's offices and elsewhere in New York.
