Cometary globule CG4. Image from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) of Cometary Globule 4 (CG4,centre right). CG4 is a large cloud of gas and dust that glows as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionised by radiation from hot young stars within and around it. It measures around 1.5 light years across and eight light years long, and lies some 1300 light years from Earth,in the constellation Puppis. The dense head (right of the red dot) is opaque but the gas around it glows through ionisation by external stars, and by reflected starlight. The red light at centre is the young stellar object Spitzer 073425.3-465409. Young stellar objects are stars that are in their early stages of formation. The red colour is due to its surrounding dust that | |
