Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder. This device uses a glass sphere to focus sunlight on the recording strip, with the focal point moving as the Sun passes across the sky. When the Sun is bright enough,a track will be burnt in the card, allowing data to be gathered on how much sunlight is received in that location. This device was invented by John Francis Campbell in 1853 and modified in 1879 by George Gabriel Stokes. This equipment is being operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service | |
