Andromeda Galaxy (M31),composite image. This image shows X-rays emitted from the galaxy's core (bright central region),as observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The rest of the image is a combination of infrared data (red) from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and optical data (blue) from the Digitized Sky Survey. The X-ray data has helped advanced theories about Type Ia supernovas, suggesting that they form from white dwarf mergers. The image is about 50,000 light years across. M31 is located around 2.9 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Andromeda. Image published in 2010 | |
