Heart attack. Artwork showing the external appearance of a human heart as seen from the front during a myocardial infarction (heart attack). One of the coronary arteries (bright red) has become blocked,preventing oxygenated blood reaching an area of the heart muscle. This has caused an infarct (grey area) where an area of heart tissue has died. The blockage is usually due to a build up of fatty deposits inside the coronary artery. In severe cases,if not promptly treated,this can be fatal. A bypass operation can restore the blood supply. Across top are parts of the major blood vessels that bring blood to and from the heart
