Robert McGee,scalping victim. This photograph, taken circa 1890,shows the scars from a scalping that took place on 18 July 1864. At the time,McGee was a 13-year-old boy working as a teamster for the US government. The caravan he was with was attacked near Fort Larned,Kansas,USA,by a band of Brule Sioux led by Chief Little Turtle. It was the chief himself who removed a large portion of McGee's scalp, along with inflicting numerous other wounds. McGee was the only survivor of the raid, selling this image some 25 years later to support his family. Photographed by E. E. Henry (1826-1917) |
