| Chironomidae midge. This non-biting midge is a fly that is found in the Cueva de Villa Luz (Cave of the Lighted House) in southern Mexico. The waters in the cave are rich in hydrogen sulphide,forming the basis of a chemical food chain and ecosystem,rather than one based on sunlight. This midge,which feeds on the bacteria that metabolise hydrogen sulphide,is preyed on the blind fish found here.
