Hooke's work on gravitation. Title page of 'An Attempt to Prove the Motion of the Earth' (1674) by the English scientist Robert Hooke (1635-1703). Hooke corresponded on this topic with Newton, and postulated that there was an attractive force between the Sun and the planets, but did not go as far or as clearly as Newton did in 'Principia' (1687). The text names the author and gives the title, and refers to Hooke's membership of the Royal Society. The publication year and location (London) are at bottom. The Latin quote is from 'Naturales Quaestiones',a survey of the natural world written by the 1st-century Roman philosopher Seneca the Younger | |
