Paranal Observatory,Cerro Paranal,Chile. The four Unit Telescopes (Antu,Kueyen,Melipal and Yepun) in the large buildings make up the Very Large Telescope (VLT). These 8.2-metre telescopes have their images combined by interferometry. In addition,there are the four smaller VLT 1.8-metre auxiliary telescopes (white),whose images are also combined. Other telescopes are the VLT Survey Telescope (VST,back edge),and the 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA,on a separate mountain peak in the background).
