Lawson's telescope. This 11-foot refracting telescope was the largest item in a set of scientific equipment presented to the town of Nottingham by the English astronomer Henry Lawson (1774-1855) for the construction of an observatory. However, the proposed Lawson Midland Observatory was never built, and this telescope was instead presented to the Royal Naval College,Greenwich. Lawson, from Bath, was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1840 for his contributions to astronomy, which included observations of comets and an 1832 occultation of Saturn.
