Sydney Cove. Historical artwork showing Sydney Cove,Australia, circa 1790,a few years after the founding of Sydney, which would become the largest city in Australia. This settlement was founded in 1788 by the British admiral and colonial administrator Arthur Phillip (1738-1814). Phillip arrived in a fleet of 11 ships with around 1400 crew and convicts. Although the settlers faced hardships, the colony was successfully established over the following four years. At bottom, settlers are seen meeting with local aboriginals, who were ravaged by a smallpox outbreak in 1789. This is a German engraving from around the middle of the 19th century | |
