Moon observations,17th century artwork. These two drawings show a Full Moon (left) and a crescent Moon (right). The cratered surface is also shown, including the prominent rays from the largest of the impact craters. The lunar mares (ancient lava seas) are shown as dark areas, while the highlands are the light areas. This artwork is from Argoli's Ephemerides (1659) by the Italian astronomer and scholar Andrea Argoli (1570-1657).
