Echus Chasma,Mars, satellite image. North is at right. This is a perspective stereo-colour image of a side canyon in the outflow region of Echus Chasma. An impact crater is at upper left, while an impact crater in front of that one eroded away when the canyon formed. It is thought that ancient groundwater and lava outflows shaped and formed Echus Chasma and its side canyons. This area is around 20 kilometres across and the canyon floor is up to four kilometres below the highlands. The image data is from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express Orbiter | |
