Bioprinter technology. Mechanical engineer Suwan Jayasinghe observing a bioprinting nozzle spraying a mixture of living cells and polymer fluid. The technique, known as 'pressure assisted spinning' uses three inkjet needles nested inside one another to seperately deliver cells,a viscous polymer and pressurised air. A small electric field is applied that converts the mixture into superfine threads with cells encapsulated within. The thread is woven into a bio-artificial tissue scaffold that could be used in organ replacement surgery or as a 'living' bandage. Photographed in 2009 at the University College London,UK | |
