Rosette Nebula, infrared image. This area of the nebula (a large cloud of gas and dust) shows a cavity formed by the strong stellar winds of a hot type of star called O-stars. The dust that has been blown away is green, while the cooler gas forming the cavity is red. Two foreground stars are also seen. These O-stars were observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST),and the results indicated that large areas around the O-stars were unsuitable for planet formation around nearby stars. The Rosette Nebula is 5000 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Monoceros. For an artwork of the danger posed to planet formation by the O-stars,see image C001/1952 | |
