Foxglove pollination. Common white tailed bumble bee Bombus lucorum pollinating the common foxglove Digitalis pupurea (pink flowers). The bee goes deep into the flower for nectar, brushing the anthers (yellow on top of the bees back). The anthers deposit pollen onto the bee. Pollen is then transfered to the stigma of the next flower that the bee visits. Foxgloves are found growing wild in Europe and the USA in woodland clearings and on dry heaths. The flowers are trumpet shaped and vary in colour from purple to white. There are darker spots and hairs on the lower inside of the flower. Foxgloves are the source of the drug digitalin,a heart stimulant | |
