Nostoc algae. Light micrograph of Nostoc sp.,a blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. The strands are formed from single-celled,prokaryotic organisms, more closely related to bacteria than to algae. Nostoc sp. algae have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, thereby playing a major role in soil fertility. It has a wide distribution and is commonly found in soil and on mud, rocks and plants. It also forms the symbiotic algal partner of a number of lichens. Cyanobacteria are considered to be exceedingly primitive organisms, dating back to the pre-Cambrian period (over 600 million years ago). Differential interference contrast. Magnification unknown | |
