The magnet yoke of the ALEPH particle detector is seen in its completed form in early 1987. ALEPH will be one of 4 major detectors at the new LEP (Large Electron- Positron) collider, due to start work in 1989 at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. ALEPH (Apparatus for LEP pHysics!) will consist of many sub-detectors,including a time projection chamber (TPC) & a lepton calorimeter. The magnet yoke contains 4000 square metres of wire chamber planes forming ALEPH's hadron calorimeter; it measures 6. 5 metres long & 5.5 metres in diameter & weighs 3000 tonnes | |
