Animation of an emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri), revealing its skeleton. This is the largest species of penguin, reaching some 130 centimetres in height and weighing up to 45 kilograms. This penguin is endemic to Antarctica, and has thick plumage and fat layers to insulate it against the cold. It has a deep keel bone as an attachment point for the muscles of the wings, which act as paddles when the bird is swimming underwater. | |
