'Fat Man' atomic bombing preparations, August 1945. US forces moving the 'Fat Man' atomic bomb at North Field, Tinian, in 1945, during preparations for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This airfield in the Mariana Islands was where US B-29 bombers took off from on their missions to drop the atomic bombs 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' on the two Japanese cities. The bombings took place on 6 and 9 August 1945, devastating the cities and killing hundreds of thousands, leading to a swift end to World War II. Deployment of the US Air Force's 509th Composite Group to Tinian began in May 1945, with the bombs arriving on the island in late July and early August. | |
