'Little Boy' atomic bombing preparations, August 1945. Atomic bomb 'Little Boy' being loaded into US B-29 bomber Enola Gay in preparation for its mission of 6 August 1945. Taking off from the North Field airfield on Tinian, in the Mariana Islands, this bomber dropped its atomic bomb payload on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place on 6 and 9 August 1945, devastating the cities and killing hundreds of thousands, leading to a swift end to World War II.
