The flight crew of 12 flew the B-29 bomber Enola Gay on 6 August 1945, taking off from and returning to their base on North Field, Tinian, in the Mariana Islands. During the mission, they dropped the atomic bomb 'Little Boy' on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place on 6 and 9 August 1945, devastating the cities and killing hundreds of thousands, leading to a swift end to World War II. | |
