Atomic bombing preparations, 1945. US military buildings at North Field, an airfield on Tinian in the Mariana Islands, where preparations took place for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This airfield was where US B-29 bombers took off from on their missions to drop the atomic bombs 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' on the two Japanese cities. The bombings took place on 6 and 9 August 1945, devastating the cities and killing hundreds of thousands, leading to a swift end to World War II. Deployment of the US Air Force's 509th Composite Group to Tinian began in May 1945, with the bombs arriving on the island in late July and early August. The clip includes a sign for the '1st Ordnance Squadron, Special (Aviation)' unit that helped assemble and transport the atomic bombs. | |
