Earth System Data Lab. Animation illustrating the European Space Agency's Earth System Data Lab analytical software and database. Observations from space and computer modelling allow us to study many aspects of Earth's land, ocean, atmosphere and biosphere on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Each stream of spatial data can be thought of as a data 'cube', with dimensions of latitude, longitude and time. This enables us to study seasonal and inter-annual changes, such as the cycle of vegetation activity across a continent or globally. Other variables can be represented on the fourth dimension of a 'hypercube'. Multiple data streams can be analysed together across all dimensions. Extreme events, such as the 2010 Russian Heatwave, can be seen as spatiotemporal clusters in the data cube and can be analysed to better understand their causes and impact.
