Close up of a panther chameleon's (Furcifer pardalis) eye. Chameleons have very good eye sight for reptiles. Their eyes can rotate giving a full 360-degree arc of vision around their body. Both eyes can be focused in the same direction, and the eyelids are fused forming a small hole just large enough for the pupil to see through. This gives sharp stereoscopic vision and depth perception, letting chameleons see small insects from a long distance. Alternatively, the chameleon's eyes can move independently in all directions. Like most chameleons, this species can change colour according to its mood and environment. Filmed in the Palmarium reserve in eastern Madagascar. | |
