White-faced ducks (Dendrocygna viduata). These ducks are nocturnal, spending the day on the shore near water. At night they dive for crustaceans, other invertebrates and plant material. They are named for their obvious white faces, which are grey in colour until maturity is reached. The male and female are similar in appearance. The ducks communicate with a whistling call, and are also known as white-faced whistling ducks. They occur in two separate populations, one in Madagascar and in Africa south of the Sahara, the other in South America from Colombia to northern Argentina. Filmed at the Parc de Tsarasaotra, a Ramsar birding site within Antananarivo, Madagascar. | |
