Milky Way over the ALMA telescope array. Pan across a view of the Milky Way in the night sky over the ALMA Central Array in Chile. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas located at an elevation of 5000 metres on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Observations began in 2011. The array has been fully operational since March 2013. In the night sky are stars and constellations of the southern hemisphere. This footage was obtained on 9 April 2016. | |
