Reconnaissance plane observing the enormous mushroom cloud from the Hardtack I Poplar thermonuclear weapon test detonation. The Poplar test had an explosive yield of 9.3 megatons of TNT, the highest of all the Hardtack I nuclear tests, and the fifth-largest detonation ever by the USA. The mushroom cloud rose quickly and had a base at 12.8 kilometres after ten minutes. The test was conducted on a barge moored off Namu island in the Bikini Atoll, on 12th July 1958. The plane is a Martin RB-57D Canberra, specialised for high-altitude reconnaissance
