Timelapse footage of subterranean termites (Coptotermes acinaciformis) rebuilding a breached tunnel. The termites are using their fast-drying faeces and fragments of wood to rebuild the tunnel walls. The worker ants have rounded heads, with older individuals being a darker shade of brown, while soldier ants, which protect the colony from attack, have pointed heads. These Australian termites build their nest in the root crown of a tree, or underground, and then build many long tunnels to reach food sources. This tunnel, on the outside of a living tree, extended 6 metres from a root crown nest. Filmed in Australia | |
