Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) in cat hairs, 3D stereoscopic coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM) footage. 3D stereoscopy is a viewing technique where two images are used (one for each eye) to create the illusion of depth (3D vision). Fleas are flightless insects that feed on the blood of their host. The flea's head is helmet-shaped to assist it when moving through the fur of its cat host. Comb-like spines (ctenidia) anchor the flea in its host's fur. The mouthparts are modified to pierce the cat's skin and suck blood. The fleas legs are also seen. The field-of-view at the start of the clip is around 2500 by 4000 micrometres | |
